What Are TSNAs?
Nitrosamines are nitrogenous compounds found in a wide range of food and cosmetic products, some of which are carcinogenic. TSNAs are tobacco-specific nitrosamines. TSNA reduction has become a major issue for the tobacco industry recently. Burley growers can have an impact on reducing TSNAs by following guidelines outlined in the Burley and Dark Tobacco Production Guide (ID-160). Proper nitrogen fertilization, harvesting and curing all contribute to lower TSNA accumulation.
